Interview with Dwight Stewart

Q:  Why should the citizens of Clarendon and Williamsburg Counties vote for you over the other candidates?

A:  I am the most experienced candidate. I served on the town council in the town of Summerton for 20 years. 2010 marks my tenth year as chairman of the Clarendon County Council. I am the only candidate with county-wide experience and this is my fourth county-wide political campaign. I understand the needs of all of our citizens. As a small businessman, I understand the challenges that small businesses face. I have contacts throughout South Carolina that I can use to benefit Clarendon and Williamsburg County citizens. One of my strengths is the ability to work with others for the benefit of all citizens.

Q:  What is your vision for Clarendon and Williamsburg Counties?

A:  I want House District 64 to be a place where citizens can make their homes, establish their businesses, educate their children and spend their leisure time. This is the same vision that the Clarendon County Council has been successfully working under.

Q:  How can you accomplish these goals as the House District 64 Representative?

A:  First, we must address financial responsibility. We have to find a way at the state level to fund services without overburdening the individual tax payer. Second, a good educational system is the key to our future. Having worked with the educators here in Clarendon County, I know they are among our most dedicated citizens. We must find a way to sustain funding for our schools. Third, I will assist the municipal and county governments in the development of infrastructure throughout the region. We have already begun some of these activities, including the Mega-Industrial Park, which is a joint effort among Lee, Clarendon, Sumter and Williamsburg Counties. Also, I will continue to work closely with the Clarendon County Economic Development Board, as well as the Williamsburg County Economic Development Board to help develop jobs for our citizens.

Q:  How has Clarendon County prospered under your leadership?

A:  During good economic times and bad, county government has maintained our level of services to the citizens. My fellow council members and I charge our administrator each year with fiscal responsibility. He and his staff and our fellow elected officials have met the challenge.
